The assessment materials, available separately or included in each unit of work, are designed to give primary teachers a framework and confidence in assessing without levels from September 2014.
The competencies for assessment cover the key elements of becoming an effective reader or writer. Teachers can use these performance descriptors to ensure that they are planning for and teaching a broad and balanced reading and writing curriculum. The descriptors are aligned to meet and exceed the expectations in the new English National Curriculum (September 2014).
The assessment descriptors make it clear what pupils should know, understand and be able to do on a termly basis from Year 1 to Year 6. The assessment is a simple ‘best fit’ judgement. Pupils will have reached the expected performance where at least three quarters of the statements on the grid are consistently secure; where all or almost all statements are consistently secure, pupils are exceeding expectations.
The assessment framework for each year group and term will also support staff in the moderation of standards and expectations at particular points in the year, thus ensuring a consistent interpretation across the school and within year groups.
